I have been a passionate long-term care nurse for over 20 years, with almost 12 years as a nurse consultant. Having used several different electronic health record (EHR) solutions, I always compared them to MatrixCare. When the opportunity to work at MatrixCare presented itself, I jumped at the chance.
And here I am – on the other side!
On the other side
Now that I am here as a clinical product manager, I know my instincts were right all those years. It can be wild in a nursing home during your shift. Sometimes, it feels more like running an obstacle course through a mine field than it does working in a nursing facility. Let’s face it… we need nursing at the bedside, not struggling with paperwork and inefficient health care records. And we have the people here to do just that.
Real heroes abound
I remember one of my first days at MatrixCare, at lunch with our developers. Upon hearing I am a registered nurse, one of them asked me, “How many lives have you saved?” I was taken aback, because I had never thought of my role as a nurse like that. As nurses, we do what needs to be done, and then some, every day.
After thinking about what he said, I said, “probably not as many lives as you as developers have saved!” They gave me a look that was somewhat shocked and baffled.
“Seriously,” I said. “Take the medications orders, for example. Because of you, nurses know immediately if the resident has an allergy to that medication, which can be life-threatening. There are also other alerts, such as drug-to-drug interactions, contraindicated medications, all of which have potentially saved many lives! YOU have made a difference!”
All real heroes are people who find a way to improve things and the lives around them. That’s what MatrixCare does for nurses and residents. We continue to improve the EHR by developing new ideas, working on industry and regulatory requirements, and creating safe nursing practices.
Focus groups = results
One example I’ve seen on “the other side” are the focus groups we do with providers. As nurse consultant, I was a participant. Now, I can see how your feedback feeds into the functional, effective workflow of the EHR.
For example, pending orders are a result of our focus groups. Now, users can input orders prior to a resident’s admission to the facility. What a time-saver for nurses! The admissions process just got a bit less stressful.
Coming to “the other side” has been exciting, if not a bit eye opening. I look forward to being part of effective and innovative functionality that will help nurses over the next several months. Stay tuned!
